As many of our citizens know . . our realm has recently experienced annoying disturbances caused by random intermittent connection drops and slow downs. Occasionally the disruptions made our server unavailable for a while.
We tried many things to resolve this:
1) Obtained a new Modem from our ISP.
2) Purchased a new (expensive) router for the system.
3) Rebooted 'everything' when the problems were persistent.
4) Prayed to the 'gods' for mercy.
Well yesterday (with little hair left to pull) we tore everything apart and ran several tests . . one little piece at a time. In the end we feel confident we discovered the source of the problem. Believe it or not . . changing one short cable from our Modem to our Router seems to have solved the whole issue.
Replacing that one inexpensive item significantly increased our upload/download speeds and has made everything run solid and smooth since. We will let this run for a few days and if the solution continues (no reason to doubt it), we will take the system down for 30 minutes while we run the cable through a wall to the router rather than having it out on the floor as it is now. We will conduct this maintenance downtime during a low population period to inconvenience as few as possible and will make sure anyone in the realm at the time is advised and protected.
