Most people playing UO today are already veterans even if they are returning to our game after years away.
So . . in an effort to help attract new players (or old returning players) to our world and get them up and running sooner we are making that step easier so they can join us in the fun.
Now . . when a new character is created the Arete Mayor will send them to a small room below his office where they can pick up some very nice 'Starter' items before entering a separate room with a 'Skill Selection Gate'. The 'Skill Selection Gate' will let them set 10 skills to GM 100 level before being teleported into our world. We trust this access to items will not be exploited.
Our hope is this might (over time) help grow the population and not offend existing citizens who have come up the hard way.
Cheers

Many other servers do this, as the initial character grind is a bit rough of a gate to entry since veterans have done it so many times over already (and it's not an aspect that's particularly missed about the experience). Sounds like a good idea to me.

I like the sound of this too :-)
I personally don't mind the skill building process as I get a lot of satisfaction in achieving the template I have settled on. Another point to make about this new enhancement that I think is good is that if one is curious about a particular template or a specific set of skills, the X10 GM straight up allows one to try out a char template you were considering but weren't enthralled about putting the time in to get there. This would be an incentive towards new char creation to keep it interesting and diverse for the existing player base as well
I like this improvement Amairgen. Hopefully we see some new faces and make some new friends in our world :-)
