what do you do at the Ancient Bard Song quest

I went to the area, there was a giant serpent and some spiders, I provoked the serpent on the spider, spider died quick. I tried to keep away from serpent to provoke it on other spiders and i ran to the end and saw a weird shaped monster that was named something balron, so i ran back to beginning and accidentally ran into the sparkles and got kicked out of area. What exactly am i supposed to do there?

I tried again and i guess im supposed to provoke 3 trolls, 2 spiders and 1 giant serpent to attack and kill a balron but that is impossible. I spent 40 hours getting provoke to 100 only to find out the quest is impossible. I am doing the quest to get that instrument container and that is probably a rare drop.
 I died and while i was getting dressed, i accidentally pulled my pet out and he died and i tried to leave thru sparkles, I did "all follow me" before i left thru sparkles and pet was following behind me but didnt exit with me, so he is dead and stuck in the quest area.

I got pet out, i didnt know about the pet retrieval saddle by Arete stables,

Figger -  are you doing the Ancient Bard Song Book quest which is given by Piper in the Trammel city of New Haven/Occlo?


There are multiple map layouts for this one, which spawn all different types of small MOBs in the beginning (ex. Skeletons, Orcs, Dung Beetles, Serpents, etc.). As you move further in you will come to a culdesac. There you will find a named Balron. Moving closer in should trigger a spawner that will spawn either a giant red Skeleton, a Giant pink/redish Beetle or a weird Red blob shaped creature. You will need to provoke the Balron onto whichever MOB spawns. I will have to say that successfully provoking the two is extremely hard at 100 music/100 provocation. I had to find a Demon Slayer instrument and run around in circles for sometimes up to 15-20 minutes before I successfully provoked the two creatures onto one another, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. It gets easier the higher your music/provo is.  As far as the instrument storage goes, it is a I believe a 25% chance drop. This container used to not even exist. If you get too frustrated with the quest, how about I just donate a storage container to you? Haha. I promise though, its not that bad...keep at it.


FYI - Amairgen has been made aware that some of the spawners in some of the map layouts are bugged. Him and I worked on at least one of them when I was doing this quest regularly. If you come across one that does not spawn, please reach out to him. He will get it worked out for you as he did for me. 


Now, If you are doing the bard quest given by the quest giver inside the Arete Zoo - that is a completely different quest. Here you are provoking a total of three times for the chance to receive the bard powerscrolls. You will not be able to get the instrument storage here. In this one you have to provoke either the Gargoyles, the Spiders, the Lich and the Dragon or the Succubus onto one another.

im talking about the quest Piper gives, the second time i did it, at the end was a balron and some big black spider appeared, i provoked the balron to fight the big black spider and the balron killed it and then the balron came after me and he killed me, then after i ressed at the ankh, as i was dressing i accidentally unshrunk my pet drow (lizard form level) then the trolls respawned and killed my pet and the trolls and balron came after me, so i exited thru the sparkles.

Are you saying the balron is on my side and should not attack me, or where am i supposed to get the reward from? I have music 115 and provoke 100.

No the Balron is not on your side. The Balron is never worth killing as it doesn't carry any loot, or at least it never did when I killed it. The reward which will be a random chance Ancient Song Book scroll, 25% chance drop for the Instrument Storage container, roughly 1k gold and sometimes a very rare chance drop for a +1 skill ball will be on the MOB that spawns, not the Balron. I would suggest dropping EV's down to aggro the Balron off of you while you loot the other MOB once is spawns, or hide near them before it dies. Also all of the other MOBs that spawn in there are trash. There is really no need to fight them. I just always ran straight past all of that to the Balron and provoked it onto whatever spawned in that culdesac with it.

Heya,

I've not had any issues with this quest, and my book is near full.
I suggest getting 120 provoke to help the quest move along a bit more smoothly, because it otherwise takes a lot of attempts to actually get the balron to fight. It can be done but I wouldn't recommend it.
And as far as strategy. If you have magery, use invsibility between provoke attempts, If you're quick with it they won't even know you're there.
